Types of Content

Here is an explanation of each type of Course Content.

Content: This pure HTML Content composed in a Word-style editor. The composition can include multimedia, such as images, as well as external links. The content is displayed on a single page in the Player.

Video: Upload a video to be streamed to the Learner’s web browser. There are various options for videos, such as auto-play and auto-advance.

PDF: Upload a PDF file to be displayed as embedded content within the Player, as opposed to as an attachment that would have to be downloaded and viewed externally.

Image: Upload an image file to be displayed as embedded content within the Player. The image will display as an iFrame.

Webpage: Provide any URL (web address) to be embedded (iFrame) as course content. This allows the Learner to view an external web page without having to leave the Course.

Attachment: Attachments can be added to any Container or Content Item. An icon will appear, and when click it will display a list of attachment links in a pop-up modal. The Student can then click a link to view (and download) the Attachment in a new window.

PowerPoint: Upload a PowerPoint presentation to be embedded as course content. This will convert your presentation to HTML. The Learner, viewing the presentation in the browser, will not need the PowerPoint application to access it.

Prezi: Provide any URL (web address) to a Prezi presentation to be embedded as course content, similar to how a PowerPoint embed works.

SCORM: Upload a .zip file containing SCORM content. The Course Player will display the content with interactions intact.

Virtual Meeting: Schedule an online meeting. See here for setup instructions.

HTML: Upload a .zip file containing HTML content. The Course Player will display the content by embedding (iframe) the HTML.

The Edit Screen for Course Content Items - Shared Configurations

After choosing the type of Content that you want to create, entering a Title, and clicking SAVE, you will see the Edit Screen for your newly created Item. While there are many types of Course Items, they all share some common configurations. Note: Course Containers and Assessments also have these configurations.cont4.png

Title: the name of the Item (required).

Prerequisite: choose another Course Item or Container that the Learner must complete before beginning this Item. This can be useful (for example) to keep Learners from jumping ahead, or to keep them from taking an Exam before viewing the content that the Exam covers.

Rest Period (available after Prerequisite is selected): you can designate a number of minutes, hours, or days that a learner must wait after completed the prerequisite before starting the current content item.

Required: check to indicate that the Learner must complete this Item in order to complete the Course.

Admin Approval: check to create a hard break point. After the Learner completes this Item, they will be locked-out of the Course. A Course Administrator will then use the Grader to approve the Student to continue the Course.

Optional HTML Content: Use this Word-style editor to compose content to be displayed on the Course Item’s page.

Active/Inactive Control: Toggle to make the Item either Active or Inactive. If Inactive, the Item will not display to the Learner.

The Edit Screen for PowerPoint Type of Course Item

Search for previously uploaded PowerPoint via its Title, and choose the desired presentation from the menu. Or, upload a new PowerPoint file by clicking BROWSE and finding it via your operating system’s File Upload window. Alternately, drag the file’s icon to the Drag & Drop area. After the file has been uploaded, enter a Title, and click SAVE & CONTINUE. The presentation will then be converted to HTML for use by your Learners in the Player. This process can take some time, so check back in to the item to see if it’s done, or wait for an email notifying you that it is done.cont8.png

The Edit Screen for Video Type of Course Item

Videos are uploaded to your Learning Management System, securely stored, and viewable to your Learners in the Player. Click VIDEO to add a Video Course Item, enter a name for the Item, and click to SAVE. The edit screen for the newly created Video Item is then displayed.

There are several configurations available on the edit screen. Check AUTO PLAY for the video to begin playing when the Learner navigates to that Item in the Player. Check AUTO ADVANCE for the Player to navigate to the next Course Item after the video is finished. This is useful if there are a series of videos that need to be watched in a row. Check MUST WATCH ENTIRE VIDEO for the CONTINUE button to be disabled until the video has ended.

You may either use a previously uploaded video, or upload a new video. To search for an existing video, enter the video’s name, and choose it from the list of results. To upload a new video; Please reference the Video Upload article for instructions and supported video file formats.cont9.png
